Work Residence Permit Application Service
The Georgian work residence permit lets foreign nationals live and work here legally, on the strength of a job or self-employment rather than capital. It suits remote workers, freelancers and employees of Georgian companies, and it runs in two stages: a Special Labour Permit first, then the residence permit itself. Here is what you need for each.

What this unlocks
No more border runs
Stay indefinitely without the 365-day countdown, and without expensive trips to Armenia or Turkey to reset the clock.
Banking that actually works
Business accounts, credit and financial services that a tourist-status account cannot get you.
Documented tax residency
A permit does not make you tax resident, but it is the documentation that supports the position when a foreign tax authority asks.
Your family can follow
Spouse and minor children can join you on dependent permits through family reunification.
It counts toward permanent residence
Every renewed year accumulates toward the ten that unlock indefinite status: provided the chain never breaks.
Renewals we watch, not you
Two expiry dates now, from two agencies that do not talk to each other. We hold both.
What a work residence permit gives you
It is an official government document permitting you to live and work in Georgia for an extended period, and the practical difference from visa-free entry is larger than it looks on paper. Visa-free status is a tolerated stay: it expires, it has to be reset by leaving the country, and banks and landlords treat it accordingly. A residence permit is legal status. It ends the border runs, it opens bank accounts that were previously refused, and it gives you documentation that supports a Georgian tax residency position rather than merely asserting one.
- No 365-day countdown and no border runs to reset it
- Full banking access, including business accounts and credit
- A documented basis for Georgian tax residency
- Your spouse and minor children can join you on dependent permits
- Counts toward the 10 years that unlock permanent residence
The order changed in March 2026. This is the part to get right
Until March 2026 you applied for a work residence permit and that was the whole process. Now the Special Labour Permit comes first, from a different agency, with its own 30-day decision period, and the residence permit application is only accepted once it exists. Applications that ignore this sequence are simply refused. Worse, the two agencies do not talk to each other about your deadlines, so it is entirely possible to hold a valid labour permit and still lose your legal stay by filing the residence permit late.
Who qualifies
Most working professionals do. The permit is built for people with a genuine economic activity in Georgia, evidenced rather than asserted, and the evidence differs depending on whether someone employs you or you employ yourself.
- A Special Labour Permit: since March 2026, the first requirement
- Employment contract with a Georgian company, or an IE registration and client contracts if self-employed
- A passport valid at least six months beyond your intended stay
- A clean criminal record certificate, apostilled or legalised
- Evidence you can support yourself. No fixed statutory minimum, but around $610 a month is generally sufficient in practice
- For employees: your Georgian employer must show $19,000 of annual turnover per foreign employee
- Valid health insurance covering your stay
- A Georgian address: owned, leased, or a registered virtual address
The 40-day rule that catches everybody
You must apply at least 40 calendar days before your current lawful stay expires. Not 40 days before you would like the new permit to start, but 40 days before the existing basis runs out. The Agency refuses to review applications filed inside that window, and it does so routinely: the most common way a well-qualified person ends up without status is not a rejection on the merits, it is a diary failure. Where the deadline is missed but the card is still valid, an application may be accepted with a good reason, but that is discretion, not entitlement. Count backward from your expiry date today.
Employed or self-employed, which route is yours
Both end in the same card. The self-employed route is the one most remote workers and freelancers take, and it usually pairs with an Individual Entrepreneur registration, which our sister site handles at $230. That registration does double duty: it evidences your activity for the labour permit and it puts you on the 1% turnover tax regime. The employed route is simpler for you and heavier for your employer, who becomes the applicant on the labour permit and has to carry the turnover requirement.

Frequently asked questions
An official document allowing a foreign national to live and work in Georgia beyond the visa-free period. It gives legal resident status rather than a tolerated stay, which is what makes banking, tax residency documentation and long-term planning work.
Since 1 March 2026, yes, and it comes first. The residence permit application is not accepted without it. Investment permit and permanent residence holders are exempt; almost nobody else is.
Budget six to eight weeks end to end from a standing start: up to 30 days for the labour permit, one to two weeks of document preparation, then 10 to 30 days for the residence permit decision. Expedited processing compresses the government stages but not the apostille.
Our fee is $450 plus VAT for the residence permit alone, $765 bundled with the labour permit, or $1,070 including Individual Entrepreneur registration. Government fees are separate: $115 for a 30-day decision, up to $230 for 10 days.
You are not obliged to have one, and plenty of people never take one. Most nationalities get 365 visa-free days, resettable on exit, and an Individual Entrepreneur invoicing clients abroad can run on that basis indefinitely. What visa-free status does not do is open full banking, document a tax residency position, or accumulate anything toward permanent residence, and it keeps you doing border runs. Those are the reasons people take the permit rather than an obligation to.
Yes. The self-employed route is how most freelancers and remote workers do it, usually paired with an Individual Entrepreneur registration that evidences the activity and puts you on the 1% tax regime at the same time.
There is no fixed statutory floor for the residence permit itself, though around $610 a month is generally accepted as sufficient. The labour permit is stricter: employers must show $19,000 of annual turnover per foreign employee, and self-employed applicants qualify on $19,000 turnover or income of at least five times the subsistence minimum.
A Georgian residence permit application must be filed at least 40 calendar days before your current lawful stay expires. The Agency refuses to review applications submitted inside that window, regardless of how strong they are. This is the most common avoidable failure in Georgian immigration.
A Georgian work residence permit is commonly issued for six to twelve months on a first application, then renewed annually. The term follows your evidenced circumstances rather than a fixed schedule, so a one-year employment contract tends to produce a one-year permit.
Passport valid six months beyond your stay, a Special Labour Permit, an apostilled criminal record certificate, proof of income or employment, health insurance covering Georgia, proof of a Georgian address, biometric photos and the application form. We build the exact list around your nationality, because the document trail differs by country.
Yes, through family reunification. As a temporary resident you can sponsor your spouse and minor children, and you will need to show adequate accommodation and financial means. We price dependents at $345 each on this route, or in a family package if there are several.
Generally yes, but it needs planning around your existing legal stay rather than assuming. If your current basis expires while you are abroad, re-entry can become the problem rather than the application. Tell us your travel dates at the consultation, not after you have booked.
Refusals can be appealed to court within 10 calendar days of notification, and since the 2025 amendments an appeal no longer suspends enforcement, which makes the deadline real. In practice most refusals are fixable document problems, and the faster route is usually a corrected fresh application rather than litigation. We tell you which of the two you are looking at.
No, and conflating the two is expensive. Tax residency is a separate test, broadly 183 days of physical presence in a rolling 12-month period. A residence permit supports that position with documentation but does not create it, and you can hold one without being tax resident.
