Who it is for
Students admitted to an authorised Georgian higher education or professional institution. The permit runs for the duration of the studies and is renewed as the programme continues. Georgia’s international student population is concentrated in medicine. The English-language medical programmes at several universities draw students from across South Asia, the Middle East and Africa, but the permit is the same whatever you are studying.

Studying and working are separate permissions
A study permit lets you live in Georgia to study. It does not authorise work, and since 1 March 2026 that distinction has teeth where a Georgian payer is involved: a part-time job with a Georgian company, or Georgian clients invoiced through an Individual Entrepreneur registration, requires a Special Labour Permit, and an employer that skips it is fined $765, with a separate $765 on the student. Remote work for clients abroad does not raise the question at all. Where it does apply it is a second application rather than something the study permit already covers, so plan for it before you start earning.
What happens when you graduate
The study permit ends with the programme, and this is where a predictable number of students lose their status: the transition is not automatic, and the 40-day rule applies to the next application as much as to any other. If you intend to stay and work, the sequence is a Special Labour Permit followed by a work residence permit, and that sequence takes six to eight weeks. Starting it two months before graduation is comfortable. Starting it after graduation is not. Years accumulated on a study permit do count toward the ten years that unlock permanent residence, so continuity is worth protecting.
