How long you have to wait
Ten years of continuous temporary residence is the standard requirement, set by the Law on the Legal Status of Aliens as amended with effect from 12 May 2021. Investment residence permit holders reach it in five. The close family of a Georgian citizen qualify immediately. The word that decides most applications is continuous: the ten years have to be unbroken lawful residence, so a gap between permits is a reset rather than an inconvenience.
Who qualifies without waiting ten years
Family relationships to Georgian citizens are the main shortcut, and they are immediate rather than accelerated. Investment permit holders are the other route, at five years.

What it actually gets you
The renewal cycle ends, which after a decade of annual filings is not a small thing. The Special Labour Permit requirement falls away entirely, permanent residents are one of only two exempt residence categories, so working, founding a company or changing jobs no longer touches your immigration status. And it is the prerequisite for naturalisation, if that is where this is going.

Continuity is what people lose it on
Ten years of continuous lawful residence means ten years without a gap. The gaps that break it are rarely dramatic. A renewal filed 35 days before expiry instead of 40, a study permit that ended in June with a work permit that started in September, a year spent mostly abroad. None of them feel like losing your residency at the time. They only surface when you apply for permanent residence and are told the clock restarted. If you are three or four years in, the useful thing to do now is document what you have accumulated, not wait until year ten to find out.

Ten. The requirement was raised from six to ten by an amendment in force on 12 May 2021. Plan around ten unless you are on the investment permit, and treat any source still saying six as out of date.
Yes, and this is what most failed applications turn on. A gap between permits, a late renewal, a study-to-work transition that slipped, breaks continuity and restarts the count. It is invisible until you apply.
Yes. Permanent residents and investment permit holders are the only two residence categories exempt from the Special Labour Permit introduced on 1 March 2026.

Years on a temporary residence permit count toward the ten. The practical risk with a study permit is the gap at graduation rather than the years themselves.

It is indefinite rather than unconditional. Extended absence from Georgia is the usual risk. If you are planning a long period abroad, ask first. This is much easier to plan around than to repair.
