Bringing Parents to Georgia on a Residence Permit

Temporary residents cannot bring parents. That needs permanent residence or citizenship. Here is what works meanwhile.

Three lit windows of descending size

The answer people arrive here hoping for is not the one they get. If you hold a Georgian temporary residence permit, which is what a work, IT or property permit is, you cannot sponsor your mother or your father. Family reunification opens that category only to permanent residents and Georgian citizens. This post gives you the rule straight, then spends the rest of its length on what you can actually arrange in the years before it applies to you.

The rule, without softening

Georgian family reunification does not treat all sponsors alike. What you can sponsor is decided by the status you hold, and parents sit above the line a temporary permit reaches.

Your statusSpouseMinor childrenParents
Temporary residentYesYesNo
Permanent residentYesYesYes
Georgian citizenYesYesYes

Almost everyone reading this is in the first row. A work permit, an IT permit, a property permit and a study permit are all temporary residence, and all four carry a spouse and minor children without argument. None of them carries a parent. The full map of who can sponsor whom is worth reading before you commit to a route, because this is the line that most often turns out to have been the important one.

It is worth being blunt about the consequence. If bringing a parent to Georgia is part of why you are moving, the family route is not a plan you can execute next year. It is a plan that starts with your own status and finishes a decade later, or it is not the family route at all.

What the door actually costs to open

Two things open the parent category, and both take time.

Permanent residence. Ten years of continuous temporary residence, raised from six by an amendment in force on 12 May 2021, or five years if you hold an investment permit. Continuity is the hard part rather than the arithmetic: a gap between permits resets the count to zero rather than pausing it, which is the subject of what breaks continuous residence and the reason a single missed renewal can cost somebody their parent's application eight years later. The mechanics sit in the guide to Georgian permanent residence.

Georgian citizenship. Ten years of continuous residence and examinations in Georgian language, history and law, or five years where you are married to a Georgian citizen. The obstacle is rarely the exams. Georgia does not generally permit dual citizenship, so naturalising ordinarily means renouncing the passport you already hold, and for most people that decides it. The full picture is in the guide to naturalisation.

The five-year investment route is the only genuine acceleration available. An investment residence permit at $300,000 runs a five-year term and reaches permanent residence in five years rather than ten, which halves the wait for the parent category as a side effect. It is an expensive way to buy time and it is the honest answer for a family where the money exists and the timeline matters.

Where people go wrong

Buying a $150,000 property in your own name does not bring a parent any closer. The property route makes you a temporary resident like any other, and its family coverage extends to a spouse and minor children. A parent is outside it either way, so the purchase that helps is the one made in the parent's own name.

What works in the meantime

This is the part of the plan that is actually available now, and for most families it is enough.

Visa-free stay is the workhorse. Nationals of around 95 countries can enter Georgia without a visa and stay up to 365 days, and the period resets on a fresh entry. For a retired parent with a qualifying passport, that is close to living here in practice, without any permit at all. The instrument is Government Resolution No. 255 of 5 June 2015, which lists countries by name and was last amended on 24 February 2026, and it is published in full on Georgia's legislative gazette. Check your parent's nationality against the list itself rather than against a table on a website, and note the date you checked. The mechanics of the reset are covered in the guide to Georgia's 365-day visa-free rule.

Understand what visa-free is not. It is presence, not status. It builds nothing toward permanent residence, and it depends on a resolution that a government amends when it chooses. Treating repeated resets as a permanent arrangement is a real risk for an elderly parent, and the practical limits of resetting at the border are worth understanding before anyone sells a house at home.

Insurance is now mandatory. From 2026 all visitors need health insurance with minimum coverage of GEL 30,000, roughly $11,500 at current rates. For an older traveller this is a real cost and a real underwriting question rather than a formality, and cover for pre-existing conditions is where these policies differ. The requirement itself is set out in the rules on mandatory travel insurance, and what a residence permit application separately expects sits in the guide to health insurance for permits.

A parent with capital does not need you at all. The routes that ask nothing about employment are open to a 70-year-old on exactly the same terms as to a 30-year-old. A qualifying property at $150,000, held in the parent's own name, produces a property residence permit renewable annually while the ownership lasts. Larger capital takes the investment residence permit at $300,000 with a five-year term. For families who can restructure a purchase so the parent is the owner, this is the fastest legal route to a parent holding their own Georgian status, and it sidesteps the sponsorship question entirely.

When the category does open, what it asks for

Sponsoring a parent once you hold permanent residence or citizenship is not automatic. Two tests apply to every family application and they are assessed against the household you are proposing, not the one you have.

Dependency. The relationship is evidenced by the birth certificate, apostilled or legalised and then translated. Dependency is evidenced by everything else: that the parent relies on you financially, that there is a reason they cannot remain supported where they are, and that the support is real rather than asserted. Regular documented transfers over a period are worth more than a letter.

Accommodation and means. The household must have somewhere genuinely adequate to live and the sponsor must show income capable of supporting the people being sponsored. There is no single published income figure and the assessment is made against household size, so an income that comfortably carried your own application does not automatically carry an application covering two more adults. A virtual address does not satisfy the accommodation test for a family, and using one is an avoidable refusal.

The eligible relationships and the grounds on which any application is refused are set out in the Law on the Legal Status of Aliens and Stateless Persons, and applications are decided by the Public Service Development Agency.

Family reunification

Your spouse, children and, if you are a citizen or permanent resident, your parents can get permits through their relationship to you.

The sequence that actually gets you there

If a parent joining you permanently is a real objective rather than a hope, the order of operations matters more than anything else on this page.

  1. Choose your own route with the ten-year clock in mind. The permit that is cheapest this year is not always the one that is easiest to hold unbroken for a decade.
  2. Protect continuity above everything. Every renewal filed before the 40-day deadline, no gaps, no lapses. This is the single thing that decides whether the parent category is available to you at year ten.
  3. Consider whether the investment route is worth five years. At $300,000 it is not a decision to make lightly, and it is the only lever that shortens the wait.
  4. Use visa-free stay properly in the meantime, with insurance in place and a clear-eyed view that it is not status.
  5. Where the parent has capital, put the asset in their name and let them qualify independently rather than waiting on you.

Our family reunification service handles the application once you are eligible, and the permanent residence work that gets you eligible is quoted after we review the file rather than from a price list. A comparison of what each route costs sits in the breakdown of residence permit costs, and where and how applications are lodged is governed by the procedural rules on granting residence permits.

Key takeaways

  • A temporary resident cannot sponsor a parent in Georgia. The category belongs to permanent residents and Georgian citizens.
  • Permanent residence is ten years of continuous temporary residence, or five for investment permit holders.
  • Naturalisation is the other door, and the renunciation expectation usually closes it.
  • Visa-free stay of up to 365 days, resettable, is the practical answer for most families in the meantime.
  • Visa-free presence is not status: no accrual toward permanent residence and no guarantee it lasts, however many years you string together.
  • All visitors need insurance with minimum GEL 30,000 of cover from 2026.
  • A parent with capital can qualify independently at $150,000 in property or $300,000 in investment, in their own name.
  • When the category does open, dependency has to be evidenced, not just the relationship.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bring my parents to Georgia on my residence permit?

Not while you hold a temporary residence permit, which is what a work, IT, study or property permit is. The parent category in Georgian family reunification is open only to permanent residents and Georgian citizens. Until you hold one of those, your parents come to Georgia as visitors or on a basis of their own.

How long until I can sponsor a parent for a Georgian residence permit?

Ten years of continuous temporary residence takes you to permanent residence, or five years if you hold an investment residence permit. Continuity is what decides it: a gap between permits resets the count rather than pausing it, so a single missed renewal can push the date out by years.

Can my parents live in Georgia without a residence permit?

Nationals of around 95 countries can enter without a visa and remain up to 365 days, and the period resets on a new entry. That covers a great many retired parents in practice. It gives presence rather than status, so there is no accrual toward permanent residence and no protection if the underlying resolution changes.

Can my parent get their own Georgian residence permit?

Yes, if they qualify on their own basis. The property route at $150,000 and the investment route at $300,000 ask nothing about employment or age, so a retired parent who owns qualifying Georgian property in their own name holds their own permit without needing a sponsor at all. That is often the fastest answer available to a family.

Does buying property in Georgia let me bring my parents?

No. A property purchase in your name makes you a temporary resident, and the family coverage that comes with it extends to a spouse and minor children. If the point of the purchase is to give a parent status, the property has to be in the parent's name and meet the threshold in its own right.

What evidence do I need to sponsor a parent in Georgia?

The birth certificate proving the relationship, apostilled or legalised and then translated into Georgian, plus evidence that the parent is genuinely dependent on you. Alongside that the household is assessed on accommodation adequate for its size and on income capable of supporting everyone in it.

Do my parents need health insurance to visit Georgia?

Yes. From 2026 all visitors must hold health insurance with minimum coverage of GEL 30,000, around $11,500. For older travellers the underwriting is the real issue rather than the premium, particularly on pre-existing conditions, so check what the policy actually covers rather than only that it meets the minimum.

Can my parent work in Georgia?

Usually yes, with nothing extra. Working remotely or for clients outside Georgia engages no Special Labour Permit, on a visa-free stay or on a residence permit. The permit bites where a Georgian employer takes them on, where they invoice Georgian clients as an Individual Entrepreneur, or where they want a work or IT residence permit of their own, which has to have the labour permit granted in front of it.

Does becoming a Georgian citizen let me bring my parents?

Yes, Georgian citizens can sponsor parents. Naturalisation takes ten years of residence and examinations in language, history and law, or five years if you are married to a Georgian citizen. The obstacle for most applicants is that Georgia does not generally permit dual citizenship, so the passport you hold now is ordinarily the price.

What happens to a parent's permit if mine lapses?

If the parent is on a family permit sponsored by you, it falls with yours, because family permits are derivative. If the parent holds their own property or investment permit, nothing happens to it, since it rests on their asset rather than your status. That independence is a real argument for the parent qualifying in their own right where the money allows.
